Older homes and tight lots in the Ballston Spa village center
The village has a lot of older houses set close together, and that changes the job. A standby generator needs clearance from windows, doors and vents, and on a narrow side yard that can mean your neighbor's windows as well as yours. Sometimes the driveway side or the back corner is the only legal spot. Noise counts here too: set the self-test for midday and point the exhaust away from the house next door.
Older houses also bring panel questions. If the electrical service has been patched over the years, the installer may need to upgrade the panel before a transfer switch can go in. On the plus side, many village homes have natural gas, so there's no tank to place on an already small lot. The installer checks whether the gas meter can handle the extra load or needs an upgrade from the utility.
Rural lots in the Town of Ballston and Milton: wells and propane
Head out of the village into the Town of Ballston, Burnt Hills or the back roads of Milton, and the job flips. Lots are big, so placement is easy, but natural gas often doesn't reach. Many of these homes run a generator on propane, either from the tank that already feeds the furnace or a larger one. If your tank is buried or sits far from the house, the line to the generator gets longer, and that shows up in the quote.
Plenty of homes out here have private wells. When the power goes, so does your water: no faucets, no flushing, no way to fill the bathtub. That's why the well pump goes on the generator first.
Well pump and sump pump load: sizing a Ballston Spa generator
A well pump and a sump pump both draw a surge when they start, and that surge decides the minimum generator size more than your square footage does. An essentials-only setup (well pump, furnace, fridge, sump pump, some lights) uses a smaller unit. Whole-house coverage with central air needs more. Our generator sizing guide explains load in plain terms, and our standby generator installation page covers the rest of the job.
Generator permit and inspection: village or town
Which office issues your permit depends on whether you're inside the village or out in the town. Either way, expect a permit and an inspection, and ask whether the installer pulls them. If you have a brand in mind, Generac or Kohler, ask whether the installer is authorized by that brand to sell and register it, since that affects warranty registration and parts.
